Rose City Comic Con 2023:
A Celebration of Fandom and Creativity
This year’s RCCC was a breath of fresh air—one of the first cons post-pandemic that truly felt like a return to normalcy. The vibe was electric, with cosplayers out in full force, and it was a blast catching up with some talented comic book artists I admire.
The celebrity lineup was stellar, though I didn’t have much time to soak it all in. My schedule only allowed for one day, but RCCC was cool enough to hook me up with a press badge so I could capture some killer moments.
Whenever a cosplayer catches my eye, I love to ask if they’ve got a few minutes to spare for some more involved photos. It’s always a highlight—using the immediate environment to bring their hard work to life.
One standout was the Chucky cosplayer. She didn’t even blink when I asked her to follow me to the Good Guys area for some shots. Her ability to take direction really made the photos pop. Sam and Frodo were a bit hesitant at first, but after showing them some sample shots, they were all in.
The jump shot outside the Oregon Convention Center was a riot. I give specific instructions to get everyone to jump in unison—it doesn’t always work, but it’s still fun. Wolverine was another highlight. We used the available lighting, and he was amped about how the photos turned out.
I’ve been toying with the idea of setting up a photo booth at cons. The vendor hall would be prime for it—so people who want awesome photos can easily get them. I’m thinking it might happen soon, and with my style, it’s sure to be unique and exciting.
The best part about RCCC being a local con? Afterward, I can head straight home if I’m beat, or get back into the groove with a studio shoot or even hit up an afterparty if something’s going on. Pro tip: invite photographers to events, hook them up, and they might just bring their camera and capture some epic shots.
Side Note: It cracks me up when I hand someone my business card, and they stash it without even glancing at it. Now, I’m making it awkward by asking for it back—just for kicks.
